5 things to watch out for under Mourinho’s new look Chelsea.

Updated: August 1, 2013

José Mourinho, a name that is bound to raise eyebrows and send shivers down the spines of the opponent. Called “the special one” and rightly so after what he has achieved, it’s time for Mourinho’s second inning at Chelsea.

With Sir Alex Ferguson leaving behind a legacy, the stage is all set and here are the 5 things to watch out for under Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

John Terry’s role:

Captain, leader and legend . With Mourinho confirming that John Terry will continue to serve as the captain, there is a little doubt in everybody’s mind if Terry still has what it takes to lead the Blues.

With the age catching up on the 32 year old and the new duo of Cahill and Luiz establishing themselves as a formidable Centre back partnership, it might just be the season when Terry is shown the bench more often than not.

The Future Of MAZACAR:

Having played just one full season together the trio of Mata, Hazard and Oscar, commonly known as “MAZACAR”, have transformed the way the blues play football. When employed together they form a devastating force, enough to rip apart any team by the scruff of its neck.

While being prolific at attacking, the defensive side of the trio is something to be worked on. They have been slow to react to counter attacks and lack the ability to read the game in their own half. It is up to the coach to decide if the “MAZACAR” can be tweaked in a way that helps maintain the balance of the side or whether it is time to look at other options like André Schurrle or Kevin De Bruyne.

Role of The Youth:

Ever since Roman Abramovich took over at Chelsea, the blues have made huge progressive strides towards the development of their academy players. The Cobham has been completely revamped to produce world-class academy youth products. But the Chelsea management has been blamed on numerous occasions for letting these young prodigies leave and then turn into potential stars of this beautiful game.

Mourinho is known for delivering success in the short term, with the help of a couple of signings. It would be interesting to see if the young blues actually get some minutes under their belt or it would be the old guards who will continue to run the show.

Relationship with the British media:

10th June 2013, Mourinho’s first press conference as a Chelsea manager once again, with 250+ reporters. “Not sure how many managers would draw this kind of crowd. Love him or loathe him, the man has charisma” said Ollie Holt from the Mirror. Jose Mourinho is known for his expressive remarks. Be it calling himself “Special One” or comparing the players with eggs.

A favorite amongst the media , Jose knows how to deal with them and uses this to his advantage. The battle between the British media and Jose is something to really look forward to.

Fernando Torres:

Ever since the 50 mil pound man joined from Liverpool, a Chelsea article is not complete without the mention of a certain Spaniard, Fernando Torres. From being a goal machine to terrorizing opponents with his pace, it would be easy to say that Fernando Torres was one of the most feared strikers of his times. Little did he know about how his life would change after his arrival at Chelsea.

Already labeled as a flop and rightly so because of his horrendous spell at Chelsea, netting a total of just 34 goals in 131 appearances for the blues. His career seems all but finished, adding to that is the revival of the young and flamboyant Lukaku and a possible transfer of Wayne Rooney. There seems to be a glimmer of hope, keeping in mind his great form in Europa League which helped Chelsea get the only silverware of the season, and registering themselves in the history books for holding both the Champions League and Europa League at the same time. To add to this, his run continued in Confederations Cup where he managed another golden boot.Maybe the winds of fortune are turning in the favor of El Niño, maybe Jose can get the best out of the Spaniard and make him the man we shelled out 50mil for. For all the Chelsea fans and for Torres the first 6 months are pivotal to decide his destiny in the blue colors.

All eyes are set on Jose now, with the promise of the upcoming season to be one of the most interesting one’s. And Chelsea already being touted as the favorites just tops it all up.
